Bundle of Joy

Healthy Start for Mom and Baby

BOJ logo - final website

“As a nurse practitioner working in our Pediatric Clinic, I look forward to providing a “bundle of joy” to our newborns’ families. They are so appreciated!  The clothes and blankets inside (especially in these tough times) are needed more than ever before. Many thanks to the Foundation community!”
— Carol Tadla Martin

The San Mateo County Health Foundation believes healthy people make healthy communities.  A positive start in life is the beginning of good health.  That’s why we developed the Bundle of Joy Program.

This two-phased program ensures that women receiving prenatal care are provided with an easy-to-follow, comprehensive book, written by our own compassionate clinicians in English and Spanish, detailing things to expect in upcoming months up until and beyond the birth. When the mother gives birth, she is provided with a special reusable baby bag, filled with hand-knitted baby items, including hats, blankets and socks, as well as diapers, clothes toys and other items.

These items are being distributed to the following clinics:

San Mateo Medical Center Pediatric and OB/Gyn Clinic, Fair Oaks Health Center Pediatric and OB/Gyn Clinic, Coastside Pediatric and OB/Gyn Clinic, Daly City Pediatric Clinic and South San Francisco Pediatric Clinic.

For many new mothers who have not spent a lot of time around newborns, their fragility may be intimidating.  Newborn Care 101, a new program at San Mateo Medical Center, offers new mothers a 5 week workshop to learn what is normal for the baby; how to tell what their baby needs; why the baby cries; and what cues to look for.

How You Can Help

  • We need help assembling the baby bags quarterly.  This includes sorting through the donated and knitted items and getting the bags ready for distribution to new mothers.  The sorting will be done at San Mateo Medical Center.
  • Get your friends together to create handmade blankets for the babies.
  • Host a collection drive for us.
  • We need new, handmade, or gently used (no stains) baby items that would go into the bags.
