Many public hospitals have developed expertise in infectious diseases, yet few have dedicated research efforts to further advance the field in service to the community as well as to its patients. Unlike research conducted at universities that is typically concerned with mechanisms of disease and actions of drugs, community-based research at the San Mateo Medical Center focuses on how to best treat people in San Mateo County, taking into account the full range of their economic, psychological, practical and emotional issues.
