Mission
San Mateo County Health Foundation mission is to promote and champion the health and well being of all residents of our community, regardless of ability to pay, primarily through supporting excellence and innovation in the County’s hospital and clinic system.
Vision
We will raise and provide a steady, stream of funds that can be used to support innovation and excellence in the San Mateo County health care system by funding necessary equipment, technology and facilities at San Mateo Medical Center and the clinics, and by funding and supporting programs that are proactive in addressing both the short and long term health care issues facing our community.
We will also be active in informing the public about the vital services provided by San Mateo Medical Center, its affiliated clinics, and the Department of Health Services.
History of the San Mateo County Health Foundation
The San Mateo County Health Foundation, formerly San Mateo Medical Center Foundation, was founded in 1989 as a non-profit benefit corporation. Its mission is to support and publicize the good work of the county medical center and its related health care services. It seeks and disburses grants and donations from individuals and foundations, purchases equipment to improve patient services and funds programs and research.
When it was founded, it was one of the first foundations formed to support a County hospital.
The Foundation has two full time and one part time staff members and its board of directors serves without compensation and makes decisions about funding priorities in cooperation with Medical Center staff and administrators.
In 2002 the Medical Center completed construction, as mandated by the State of California , of a new facility on the same site of the original hospital that was built in 1923. The Foundation was the only source of funds to equip and furnish the new structure and raised over $5 million dollars. Generous contributors included the Schwab Family Foundation, George and Addie Keller Foundation and the Packard Foundation.
Through the commitment of a dedicated board of directors and staff, Foundation is continuing its efforts to support the Medical Center and its mission to " Open Doors to Excellence in Healthcare " for all in the community. In July of 2003 a capital campaign was initiated and by the end of 2005 $9M was raised. The intention of the organization is to complete a $12M campaign by January of 2007, and it was completed in October 2006.
In October 2006, the Foundation Board of Directors decided to change the name of the Foundation to better reflect our new mission statement and expanded vision. The San Mateo Medical Center Foundation is now known as SAN MATEO COUNTY HEALTH FOUNDATION.
